Goats & Chickens
Goats
Our goats are such a vital part of what we do. We struggled when getting started though because we were set on having fancy pedigreed animals. Finally after much heartache we changed our tactics and have been so pleased with the results. Rather than focusing on registrations and milking stars we started focusing on disease resistance, parasite resistance and the ability to maintain body condition while kidding and lactating. Yes our girls average about half gallon to 3 quarts a day as compared to a gallon plus of other goats. However, the sad truth is, in order to get that kind of production out of each doe you need access to a 24/7 on call vet and a hefty cash reserve to pay for that service or chances are highly likely it will not end well. It seems to get us further and further away from self reliance which totally defeats the purpose of what we were trying to do in the first place.  Goats are herd animals anyway, so keep 2 instead of 1. Same amount of milk, goats are happy, I'm happy. It's all rainbows and unicorns from there!
